Last weekend saw the MM24 Girls taking part in the UK Lions festival at Nottingham Hockey Centre. This tournament see’s Regional Teams from all over the Country take part in two fantastic competitions. The Championship and the Trophy and both are very competitive and of a high standard.
The two MM squads all stay in accommodation at the University of Nottingham and experience what it is like to stay as squads in a camp environment. We shared our Halls with teams from Ulster, Wales and the South West of England. It was very busy and lively.
Matches started on Friday afternoon, with the Marauders both playing teams from Ulster in the evening, two strong wins for the MM, it put them in good spirits for the weekend.
Saturday was a blur of busy activity in match preparation and organisation and the playing of the games themselves. In total a further six games were played, with the two squads winning 5 out 6 and drawing 1. This put the two squads into their respective semi finals on Sunday.
Sunday saw both squads win their semi finals and for the first time the Marauders were in two finals. The Trophy team were up first and they played in a fantastic final v the West Panthers, which in a tense game saw the Marauders come out as winners thanks to a Amie Boardman drag flick.
The Championship played in another tense and nail biting game against Ulster. Ulster took the lead early on as they appeared more familiar with the water based pitch, however the Marauders came back strong and created many chances but sadly the Ulster keeper and defence were very brave and despite getting one goal back, the marauders conceded a counter attack goal whilst they were going for the winner. So the final was won by Ulster in a fiercely competitive game.
Overall all though we are incredibly proud of the MM24 girls, they have been brilliant to coach and work with. Winning the Trophy and runners up in the Championship is testament to the hard work and effort put in by the whole group.
More importantly the girls have made new friends from all across the Midlands and indeed from all around the UK. Thank you everyone that has supported the girls……..come on Marauders!
